Events for the  WGV area are listed below which should give you some ideas on what to do with all of your spare time.

Hi Neighbors,

This week’s staycation was spent with our grandchildren starting at the Kennedy Space Center.  The whole family met us at the space center then we all drove back to WGV to enjoy the St. Augustine area.  We walked around the Kennedy Space Center and went into the simulator ride.  It was a combination of fun and learning.  I thought there would be more, and maybe there was … we didn’t take the bus trips.  I hear there is a warehouse to see some authentic spacecraft on one of the bus trips.  St. Johns County is offering a special deal … one adult gets one child in free; the child must be between the ages of 3 and 11.  You go to the official website and search for the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Center (321-867-0025) and download the coupon – a few if you need more than one.  You must present your coupon and a driver’s license when buying your tickets at the gate (cannot buy these online).  Mapquest gave good directions – it was approximately 124 miles.  One more thing off my bucket list – I’m glad I did finally get there.  We spent time in our neighborhood pool with all the fun stuff we bought at the store I mentioned in a previous email – the shark is huge!  The smaller kids took turns sitting in the little blowup boat watching t.v. and taking naps in – seemed it was more of a hit out of the water than in. And the pool at Serenata was fun but they loved the Serenata beach.  We rented the boogie boards that they road for the first time and had a blast.  They built sandcastles and took a few minutes here and there to sit in the shade under the beach umbrellas.  They asked if we were going to Caddyshack for “happy hour” … they know when they come for a visit they get to see our neighbors and Rocco and cherry cokes and buffalo wings!  That is one of their highlights.  I think we may visit the golf course I also mentioned in an earlier email across the Shands bridge and on the left – our grandson is interested in trying golf (he plays baseball) so we thought that would be a good course to try especially with their rates … depending on the day you can get a cart and play 18 holes for $20 for the adult and ½ price for a child … also a bucket of balls is just $3.  Yes, we sure fit a lot in these past two days and more fun still to be had.  Hope you have a good weekend and a great week!

WGHOF INDUCTION – IS MOVING … BUT JUST THE TIMEFRAME NOT THE LOCATION!

It was announced that the World Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is moving from the Fall time frame to the Monday of the Players Championship week.  The date is May 9, 2011.  There had been rumors that it was leaving the WGV … to be held possibly in NYC.  We’re glad to hear the news that the Induction remains here in WGV at the WGHOF.  The May 9th date will be a great time for the community to bring their chairs and enjoy the Induction.

LUDICROUS ART SALE WEEKEND – July 24th & 25th

Location:  Simple Gestures on Anastasia Blvd. (next to Gypsy Cap Co. Restaurant)

Many of their artists regularly featured are banding together to offer you Art at insane prices.  They are cleaning out their closets and studios.

Saturday:  Enjoy the music of Lonesome Bert & the Skinny Lizards between 4 & 6 pm.

Homemade pies will be shold to raise funds for Pie in the Sky of Hastings.  There will be paintings, jewelry, leaded glass, etc.   (827-9997)

JULY 24TH -- MID-LIFE CRISIS WILL BE PLAYING AT THE SERENATA BEACH CLUB

For Serenata members.  If you're not a member, ask your neighbors or friends to take you over for a visit, you'll enjoy it.

ST. AUGUSTINE JAZZ JAM – July 25th

Joint the St. Augustine Jazz Society for a Sunday of Jazz.  This monthly event is being held this Sunday, July 25th at Royal St. Augustine Golf Club.  Members $2 Non-Members $4  www.staugustinejazzsociety.net   Royal St. Augustine usually offers special lunch specials for this day.  Bring your dancing shoes or just sit back and enjoy the music. All are welcome.

GOLDEN DRAGON ACROBATS – ST. AUGUSTINE AMPHITHEATRE – SEPT. 3-4

I saw this show last year and it was great entertainment for the whole family.  Their 2010 show is called “Cirque D’Or” which is a combination of acrobatics, traditional dance, spectacular costumes, ancient and contemporary music and theatrical techniques.  We enjoyed one activity where the performer kept adding chair after chair after chair with him at the top.  I forget how many chairs but I was holding my breath!  And with the price of event tickets today – this was refreshing … $12 for adults, $6 for seniors and children.  Gates open at 6 pm and the show starts at 7:30p.m. on both days.  It’s a beautiful outside theatre.  If you’ve not been to the Amphitheatre yet, this might be a good introduction – especially to get ready for the fun holiday events soon to follow.

 Hi Neighbors,   7/16/2010

Have you ever tried Rita’s ices?  I had to wait until my brother and his family came down from Georgia to introduce me to Rita’s ice & gelati (rich ice cream made with eggs).  We spent the day at Serenata and when they found out there was a Rita’s in St. Augustine they said we have to go!  So when we left Serenata we had a little bit of a trip to get there but it was like a tour for the gang.  I was in one car on my cell phone pointing out the sites to my brother on his cell phone in the other car – those trolley’s have nothing on me!  So we headed to Rita’s … over the Vilano Bridge, past the Kingfish Grille, made a left at the carrousel, passed a few favorite restaurants like Cortesses and LaPavilion, past the Fort and restaurants on the waterfront (Tini Martini bar) and the horses and carriages and then over the Bridge of Lions (yes the bridge was working fine this day!) and headed towards 312 past the Alligator Farm and made a left and headed down towards the St. Augustine Pier and beach and just a little past the pier on the left we found the pot of gold – Rita’s!!  Whew … I was thinking this ought to be worth the trip … and it was.  The kids said you have to have a gelati and ice mixture (they layer them) so I had cherry ice and chocolate gelati – tasted like a tootsie pop!  The others chose mango and vanilla gelati.  This brought me back to Brooklyn where we had a little corner storefront that sold just “Italian Ices”.  The cherry ice at Rita’s brought me back and the chocolate gelati made me think of the custard from Coney Island (now if they would only sell Nathan hot dogs & fries!).   We’ll be back Rita’s!!  (There’s also a Rita’s hotdogs on 1 but I don’t think they’re related and I haven’t tried them yet – your comments if you have).

p.s.  I did not make it to the Sun’s game … didn’t think I would last through the 100 degree weather but my Georgia family did go and they had a blast!  The Suns won and on Friday nights they have fireworks (last week with a St. Patty’s theme) and other fun activities.  They sat in the “danger zone” … along the foul line where lots of foul balls bounced off the roof above them!

PJ’s ASIA ONE MARKET

Hi Neighbors,   July 9, 2010

Hats off to the WGV for another fun night of fireworks in spite of the on again off again rain.  It was fun having dinner with neighbors then gathering outside to enjoy the fireworks.  I don’t go to Jacksonville or St. Augustine … these are our community fireworks, here in WGV.  Also … if you know of anything cool coming up that you think the neighbors would like to hear about … drop me a line and I’ll share the info.  You know we have this nice park here in WGV … any adults interested in getting some baseball games going?  Co-ed.  That might be fun.  I’m going to my first Sun’s baseball game this weekend!

PHOTOS WGV FIREWORKS and THE GLENMOOR PARADE

If you missed them, Graham Martin (photographer – you’ve seen his name on many a photo in the WGV Community Journal) was there and the photos are as spectacular as the fireworks themselves.  Charles (our neighborhood webmaster) has already posted them at www.wgvsocial.com -- click on the sidebar topic that says Photo Gallery.  Graham was also there for the Glenmoor Independence Day Parade on Saturday.  Folks really had fun decorating their golf carts and the bikes for the kids.  I enjoyed waving the flag at each participant as they passed by.  Thanks to the residents of Glenmoor and the staff and activity director Mindy for a great time.  Guests also enjoyed snacking on popcorn, watermelon, and chocolate chip cookies.

Tickets are now on sale at www.WorldGolfIMAX.com to see Christopher Nolan’s Inception – one of the most highly anticipated and intriguing movie events of the summer – at the World Golf Hall of Fame IMAX Theater, the largest IMAX screen in northeast Florida. The film opens Fri., July 16

From the director of Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan brings us an original sci-fi actioner starring Leonardo DiCaprio not to be missed on North Florida's largest IMAX screen. (Rated PG-13)

Movie Club Members can reserve your tickets now by calling (904) 940-4133.

(Mon-Sat 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sun 12-6 p.m.)

FORT MENENDEZ at Old Florida Museum

Went to the Grand Opening – free for the sneak peek.  I think it has potential but is a work in progress.  If you are from St. Johns County the cost is $5.00.  If you are not a St. Johns County resident the cost is $11 for adults and $7 for children.  This is privately owned.  They are working hard to establish this museum.  One room has a drum that the kids like to beat … it’s kind of like sitting in a teepee.  The kids seem to enjoy it very much.  259 San Marco Ave, at the corner of State Road 16 and San Marco Ave.

Just take SR16 East to the end and you’ll see the museum right in front of you.

RENAISSANCE 500 SOUTH STIMULUS MENU

I was pleased to see quite a few neighbors enjoying the stimulus dinner this Wednesday.  Most from my neighborhood!  It would be great to see and meet more from all our neighborhoods.  It seems the most popular dinner being ordered is the Fish and Chips.  I had the Chicken Parm – usually I enjoy my pasta with it but it came with broccoli and that was probably a healthier choice and most enjoyable.  My husband had the scallops … he likes the small bay scallops and that’s what they had in a light puffed pastry with mushrooms, zucchini and asparagus in a delicate cream sauce.  I think some nights they have the sea scallops as well, it depends.  And don’t forget … each entrée comes with 1 glass of house wine or a domestic draft beer or a choice of soft drink – all for $9.99; good from 5pm – 6:30 pm Sunday thru Thursday nights only. Reservations are not required, but if you would like to make them the phone number is 940-8623.

NEW MENU PLANNED AT 500 SOUTH!

A new menu is being planned at 500 South.  I had a chance to meet with our friends at 500 South and had a taste of things to come.  There will be a lot more choices.  Fun choices like buffalo shrimp on flatbread or a Greek salad on flatbread. Breakfast items like Belgian waffles and crab topped eggs Benedict.  What about Ahi tuna on the dinner menu.  Very attractive meals. Lots of choices … you choose your starch or your vegetable.  And for those snackers, like me, there is a mild and tasty hummus with pita points, Thai chicken wings and if you’re looking for a little taste at the bar they will have homemade potato chips with such a delicious and mild onion dip – I could eat that all day!  They are kicking it up a notch and hope all the neighbors will come out and try out the new items.  It will be available in about a week so stay tuned!

FRIDAY – DENNY’S HAPPY HOUR NEWS

Denny has set up happy hour at the King & Bear for Friday this week.  With a special happy hour menu.

NIGHT OWL CINEMA UPDATE

I contacted the marketing person at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre to find out what has happened to all the movies they used to have on Fridays and sometimes Saturdays.  Unfortunately, they’ve had to cut back but are planning two special event dates.  One for back to school and one for Halloween weekend.  They’ll make those announcements on their website as soon as they have all the information together.

MATT’S MEALS

Someone mentioned the meals that our coming out of The Village Church.  I thought this would be great for my Mother.  So when I saw Pastor May at the Glenmoor parade on Saturday I asked him about it.  He gave me a card where information would be on their website.  Unfortunately … Matt’s Meals are on vacation at this time but will be returning in the Fall.  I was looking forward to checking this out.  Pastor May said the meals had been running around $15 and would feed a family of four.  I will check back in the fall and keep you posted!   The website is:  www.villagechurchwgv.com and then click on Community Outreach on the sidebar and then “Matt’s Meals”.  Pick up is every Tuesday.

SERENATA BEACH CLUB

Was just amazing this past weekend … Mother Nature provided a lovely breeze from the rain that was on its way.  We got in a few hours on the beach before some rain did finally arrive … especially since when I left for the beach it was raining in WGV.  I’ve learned, living on L.I., that it could be raining on the “mainland” but at the beach the weather could be totally clear.  We’re expecting the grandkids in a few weeks and we can’t wait to take them to have fun at the kids pool and the ocean.  I also have family members coming this week and can’t wait to go to the beach and have lunch at Serenata.  Can you tell I just love that place!

Went to the concert at the beach tonight with some of our neighbors and there was quite a crowd.  And I stopped in at the office by the Pier and checked on the fees for accessing the pier.  It’s now $1 for anyone wanting to go on the pier.  Free for St. Johns seniors (minimum 60 yrs. old) – you’ll need to show proof of age and that you’re a St. Johns resident.  Fishing fee off the pier for St. Johns residents is $2.00.  Coolers and chairs are allowed.  We could have listened to the band from the pier if we wanted to.  That might have been nice too … but it’s fun being in the middle of all the folks attending the concert.

SHIRTS & STUFF

I was so excited telling you about all my summer blowup fun bargains last week I forgot to tell you the address and phone number in case you need to buy any blowup sharks and crocodiles alligators for the pool!  Shirts & Stuff is located at 900 A1A Blvd in the Lighthouse Plaza shopping center. Dave’s Phone # is 226-1666.

////////////////

Hi Neighbors,    June 24, 2010

I know the Spring / Summer activities are slowing down, but already I’m seeing postings for the Fall!  Oh no could it be we’ll start seeing pumpkins soon!  No no … just kidding … we’ve got plenty of fun summertime ahead of us.

But I did see one starting as early as September that I’ve not heard of before so I’ll share it with you.  Kicking off the season at WGV is the “Jacksonville Tattoo Convention” which is moving its venue this year to the Renaissance Resort here at WGV on 9/3.  Interesting.  I guess they’ll be changing the name to WGV Tattoo Convention.   Price: $15 One day- $35 Weekend Pass

Since I don’t have too much to report for the calendar I’ll share this summer fun story with you …

We had been looking for some fun swim items for the grandkids and some of the prices were a little out there.  Even when they mention big blowout sale, etc. We were looking for the pool store and heard there was one on Anastasia Island … a little past the Alligator Farm.  We were almost there and on the left I spot a blow-up alligator hanging outside this store on the left that says “Shirts & Stuff”.  So we go to the big store and they had lots of stuff for your pool, but had limited blow-up tubes and rafts (and were expensive).  So I said let’s go back to that little store.  Well … we picked up lots of blow-up swim items for very good prices!  The fellow Dave just bought the store and opened just a few days before we got there.  Dave will blow up any or all of your items for you.  We got a 7’+ shark ($7.95), and a 5’+ alligator (the box says crocodile but we don’t have crocodiles in this area so I’m sticking to alligator!), two big fun tubes (one with whales and one with our stars and stripes on it) – these were buy one get one ($4.95), a few 24” beach balls for $1.19 each and a few more items.  The kids loved them!  So visit Dave – I told him I would share this great find with the WGV neighbors.  Also I asked him how to blow up the beach balls – I bought one last year for the kids and couldn’t get it blown up … you have to really squeeze the bottom of the part you blow into so it opens and allows air in.   OK so maybe you knew that! J  For those of you who didn’t, it still took a while for the beach ball.  So if you don’t have to travel with them, let Dave use his machine to blow them up before you leave the store!  I don’t think you should leave these in the car in the heat though.  Have fun and be safe, these are not life saving devices … just to have a little fun with.

Summer Concerts

I added the July dates to the concerts below.

Restaurant / Bakery / Opus  39

I heard Opus 39 and the bakery in St. Augustine closed.  I heard about this restaurant that offered a very eclectic dining experience for its patrons but I never had the opportunity to go there.  I heard the bakery had some wonderful bread.  Sorry to hear of another place closing.

IMAX

IMAX – TWILIGHT SAGA, ECLIPSE – Starts June 30th at 12:01 a.m.

June 30th Premier!  The third film in The Twilight Saga, Eclipse, is premiering at the World Golf Hall of Fame IMAX Theater June 30 at 12:01 a.m. Be the first to see this film and experience it on the largest IMAX screen in North Florida.  If you’re in the neighborhood you may want to stop in and pick up your tickets ahead of schedule.  I’ve not seen any of these Twilight movies … but anything at IMAX is more exciting so we will definitely catch this.  Go to the IMAX site to read more about this and upcoming movies, schedules, ticket prices … membership is the way to go!

Coming Soon to IMAX!

Inception | July 16

Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan directs an international cast in an original sci-fi actioner that travels around the globe and into the intimate and infinite world of dreams. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb’s rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible—inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.

Reminder July 2nd Don’t forget to make your reservations for the fireworks at WGV … there are a few choices … see below.  Bring your chairs and enjoy the fun with the kids running around before the fireworks.  Last year we opted for a suite and watched everyone from above.  The kids really seem to enjoy the time away from their computers and just hanging out being kids playing and using their own imaginations.
