This IS 316 stainless steel, and I learned how to peen to secure it. Not difficult BUT a hard surface is required. Takes time to peen, but you will know when it's tight and completed. Two halves joined by peening, compared to a single link welded, I don't know the strength difference, but I trust it on my 46' boat anchor chain. Statements saying not for overhead use might be insurance or lawyer related, but again, not sure.

I needed this to join 2 x 50ft lengths of chain on my boat. I assembled the chains applied and peined the link and installed the anchor and chain on my boat. It has held up so far and runs easily through my windlass.Time will tell on its longevity, so I did not rate it 5 stars.

Rescued my chain when I had to cut-out the corroded middle. That is BBB 5/16" chain. After a year the link is holding-up as well as the chain.

I was a bit concerned reading the reviews regarding peening down the pins and since I was doing this at my boat dock made me even more concerned. However I decided to use an air hammer with a bit I modified to be rounded and using a visegrip to hold the link. I brought an extra vise (only to use the flat anvil on the back of the vise) I had from the shop to the dock along with a pancake air compressor and peened the pins down perfectly. Better than I expected!

The windlass will catch this link every once in a awhile, but it’s never jammed. It was a little harder to pien than others I have used in the past.
