Much better than the cheaper tools I was using. Handles still feel small, though.

The tools included in this kit are all well made, comfortable to use, and are the most common tools you'll need to tie flies. Each and every tool gets used almost every time I tie. What you get here is vastly superior to what you would receive in many of the starter kits sold to new fly tyers. If you want to expand your selection of tools, Loon also sells an accessory kit to expand your kit.

The kit came qiockly and the packaging was good. The tools look nice. This is my first set of fly tying tools and I'm a newbie at tying. I've used the tools to tie just slightly less than a dozen flies. The plastic tool box is nice, looks good and will transport the tools well if desired. The foam inside that's made to form fit and hold each tool in place is a good thing. The foam is a lot better than some tool kits that have tool shapped inserts that are a vacuum formed plastic sheet. The tools are held in place well and they won't shake and rattle around if taken in the field. In fact, the foam in my kit fit the tools so tightly that it requires dedicated effort to remove and replace each tool. The whole set looks and feels like good quality materials and workmanship. The scissors cut good and you can get precise placement of the narrow tips.So far the only thing I'd suggest a modification to the hackle pliers. Squeezing them is awkward because the angle of each handle allows the finger / thumb to slip, making it hard to get the pliers open. The bobbin holder: I'm not sure whether it's by design, but the holder soesn't fit sewing thread spools. I had to make some of my own spools and make them narrower than my sewing thread spools. Other than that the spool holder works OK with the spools I made. The dobbin and the whip finishing tool look and feel like quality instruments. I still need practice to master the whip finishing tool. I haven't tried the whip finisher as a dubbing thread winding device, but I suspect it might be used for that technique. The bobbin holder has a very small inside diameter tube. It's impossible to load thread through that tube without a bobbin threader. In my opinion the kit would benefit if a bobbin threader was included. I had to make my own threader and I had a hard time coming up with what material to use to make the threader. I finally settled on using the smallest diameter steel string off a Mandolin. A Guitar or some other similar metal music instrument string will do for the threader, but for most people that's a trip to a town where the strings are available plus the expense of travel, the time and the cost of the string.Value for the money? I'm a tight wad. I wanted to be sure I got a good set of tools first instead of trying cheaper sets of tools and not being satisfied with cheaper tools and ending up spending more for 2 or 3 sets than if I got a good set of tools first. I watch and read reviews before making such purchases. The Loon company is proud of their products as shown by the price. I'm glad I got good tools. I'm happy with the tool set.
