The top surface is a film that is very thin like plastic wrap. When you route the material the film starts peeling off around the edges exposing a white backing. I wouldn't recommend if you plan to route your pickguards from a template.

I was not expecting this to be so heavy. The pickguard it is going to replace weighs nothing. This is sturdy and high quality. I am really looking forward to replacing the old pickguard. Because I received two, I will make a couple pickup and wiring iterations. Then I can change the tone of the guitar by just switching pickguards with all of the electronics preinstalled.

As soon as I opened the package I was disappointed with how it looked. It might pass for tortoiseshell at a distance, but as soon as you get close you can see that the tortoiseshell design is just a thin film that they put over the black-white plastic. Even the print quality of the film isn't good, it's very obviously printed. I wouldn't feel confident in the film lasting any abuse - I could easily pull it up with my nail. Will be returning this and looking for an actually solid piece of tortoiseshell plastic.
